The Nest @ Sossus, located in the Namib Desert’s magnificent escarpment, is tucked away in a verdant valley on the exclusive Namib Tsaris Conservancy. This valley is a seasonal natural water pool and waterfall oasis in the middle of a barren desert, drawing in a variety of nearby game. A floodlit waterhole offers fantastic birding as well as fascinating and barren desert wildlife viewing.
The Nest At Sossus, one of Namibia’s most exceptional private villas in terms of both design and décor, was created over the course of eight years, including a three-year build, utilising the distinctive structure of a Sociable Weaver nest as inspiration. The Nest was conceived by Swen Bachran, a landscape environmentalist, designed by Porky Hefer, one of Africa’s most celebrated creative figures, and embellished by Maybe Corpaci, a rising star.
The Nest @ Sossus is just a short drive from the entrance to Sossusvlei and the Great Namib Sand Sea, which has just been designated a World Heritage Site. It is situated on the private 24,000 hectare Namib Tsaris Conservancy, hidden between the Nubib and Zaris Mountains. Swen Bachran, a landscape conservationist, developed The Conservancy in 2010. It acts as a haven for wildlife during the dry season and a natural buffer from the harshest desert conditions.
One of the most beautiful and ecologically sound tracts of land in the area is the result of eight years of intensive work to undo sixty years of unsuitable farming practices, which included the removal of 89 km of internal fencing, the installation of wildlife watering points, the improvement of road networks, the rehabilitation of land, and the reintroduction of wildlife that previously occurred here.
The Conservancy is made up of gravel plains, mountainous regions with dry riverbeds, and a sizable raised plateau that rises above the desert below. It is now home to some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the region, including Oryx, Springbok, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Burchell’s Zebra, Kudu, Hartebeest, Giraffe, Steenbok, Klipspringer, Bat-eared Fox, and Aardwolf, as well as predators such as Leopard, Cheetah and Spotted Hyena. There are ongoing plans to expand the Conservancy by acquiring adjacent land and removing fences from around conservation areas that share the same values.
