Azura Peri-Peri Beach Club – Unsurprisingly, the sole beach club in the Bazaruto archipelago is this modest Robinson Crusoe haunt. Stella and Christophe Bettany, the proprietors of Azura Retreats, whipped it up for visitors to their eco-lodge on Benguerra Island, which is located less than a mile down the beach.
The Portuguese heritage of Mozambique is evident in the menu’s emphasis on seafood and the colorful blue and white hand-painted tiles at the thatched open-air bar with swing seats and Pedro and José, the bartenders who prepare the best frozen Margaritas. On the island, repurposed wood was used to create all of the handcrafted furniture.
To pair with grilled prawns peri-peri, fried calamari, filled crab shells, or fish skewers that you can cook over hot coals at your table, order a magnum of Château Pas de Loup rosé from the Bettany’s’ French château. Avoid using too much of the homemade hot sauces, and keep a “doshem” 2M beer on hand to cool things off. After lunch, retire to the sea-view salas, relax with a board game or a thriller read, take a plunge in the pool, or head to the spa treehouse for a massage. Laidback Peri-Peri always feels like a private party, despite the fact that guests from & Beyond, a few dunes away, and visiting boats from other islands increase the attendance, particularly on Sundays when the chill music is typically followed by evening beach movies beneath the stars. Azura Peri-Peri Beach commemorates Mozambique’s Portuguese heritage, and Portuguese design elements can be found in both the restaurant’s food and interior design. Since we’ve long admired renowned beach clubs like Club 55 in the South of France, we wanted to design a setting like this at Azura so that guests could enjoy our lovely stretch of beach in elegance. With exquisite drinks and magnums of Rosé from our Chateau in France, guests can spend the day unwinding here. They can also taste Mozambican specialties like crab casquinhas and piri-piri chicken and prawns. We’ve added a pizza oven and personal charcoal grills to the tables, which open to reveal sizzling steak and prawns in the Azura style.

It was designed and built from the ground up, requiring the complete overhaul of the infrastructure and the construction of new amenities such as a bar, restrooms, a new kitchen to recreate the renowned five-star cuisine served at Azura, a pizza oven, lounging pavilions, and raised sala areas, similar to those found at each of the 20 Villas. As in-house guests are always given preferential treatment, Peri-Peri Beach Club will only be open to the general public with prior arrangements. There are daily packages available that include meals, drinks, access to the bar and pool. Additionally, visitors from the neighborhood can take advantage of fly-in helicopter packages to experience the Club and Azura’s famed hospitality. On request, private use for events and celebrations can be arranged. The hottest site this side of Two-Mile Reef is where Azura Retreats and Peri-Peri Beach Bar are excited to welcome visitors.
